5 Lazy Journaling Hacks for When Your Motivation Has Gone Kaput

We know journaling is good for us. It gives us a place to process our thoughts, understand our feelings, and can be a therapeutic outlet for our emotions.

But let’s be real—there are days where journaling just feels like a chore.

Whether you’re staring at a blank page or struggling to muster the motivation, it’s perfectly normal to hit a roadblock in your journaling routine.

In this post, we’ll explore five simple hacks that will help you journal even when you’re not feeling it. From quick writing bursts to lighthearted prompts, these strategies will help you reconnect with your journaling practice without the pressure.

So get settled in your favorite spot, crack open your journal, and let’s dig into some easy journaling!

1. Embrace the 5-Minute Rule

The idea is ridiculously simple: set a timer for just five minutes and allow yourself to write without any pressure or expectation. This short time frame makes journaling feel more manageable and less intimidating, especially on days when you’d rather do anything else.

During those five minutes, focus on whatever comes to mind—thoughts, feelings, or even make a list of things you’re grateful for. The key is to write freely and let go of any self-judgment.

You might be surprised at how quickly those five minutes fly by and how much you can uncover in such a short time! Plus, once you get started, you may find that you want to keep going beyond the timer.

2.Utilize Fun Prompts

If journaling is feeling a little dry and boring, try answering a few prompts like “if I had a magic wand, what three wishes would I make today?” or “which movie universe would I like to live in?”.

These lighthearted prompts not only make journaling more enjoyable but also encourage you to think outside the box. This shift in perspective can help you look forward to journaling, turning it into a relaxing escape rather than another thing on your to-do list.

3. Switch to a Different Format

Regular old journaling just not doing it for you? Switch it up.

Utilizing different formats can help reignite interest and make today’s journal entry feel less like pulling teeth. Try some bullet journaling, doodling, or use an app. You could even record yourself talking it all out if you’re really feeling fancy.

The important thing is to just change it up because the brain thrives on variety when routines get stale.

4. Create a Comforting Ritual

If there’s a secret hack to journaling everyday, having a set routine would be it. When you sit down to journal, combine the activity with something else you enjoy. Drink some tea, listen to some calming music, light a candle, wear your favorite pair of socks, have a snack, etc.

This can make the thought of journaling more of a comforting and relaxing thing which can help motivate you when you’re struggling.

5. Write Freely Without Limits

If you think you need to write like Emerson or Thoreau, forget it. There’s no need to be insightful or profound this time. In fact, don’t hold yourself to any limits. Simply write down whatever comes to mind. And I mean whatever.

If it’s gibberish, a random thought, or a doodle, just do it. In the end, it gets the mental gunk out of the way and gets your thoughts flowing. And sometimes, that’s all it takes.

Ready to Get Journaling Yet?

As awesome as journaling is, I’ll be the first to admit that it can sometimes feel like a homework assignment. You get busy, distracted, tired. But it’s precisely in those moments when you don’t feel like it that you need to journal most.

It’s easy when you’re feeling motivated, but motivation runs out.

Give these methods a shot and see if they help jumpstart your journaling routine the next time you’re tempted to put down your pen and pick up your phone. You’ll be glad you did.
